My reasons behind the challenge
The reason I want
to take part in this challenge and encourage others to do so, is the history of heart disease in my family.
Jeanne - Grandmother.
My grandmother had a triple bypass surgery in her late 60’s. This was a success but the system waits until you’re dying on the table before doing any surgery’s that save lives. I believe prevention is what needs to come in to place and bypass surgeries should be available to those with chronic artery blockages, before it’s too late.
I have more knowledge and want to get the word out there how important it is to take care of our hearts.
Angela - Mother
My mother suffered chest pains and was sent away from A&E with a prescription of ‘acid reflux’ tablets. Her pain continued and she knew something wasn’t right. A friend of mine who’s mother had also had heart disease, told me to go back and say/do whatever you need to do to make them do an angiogram.
We got that angiogram done and it turns out that she had a heart attack or possibly a couple of heart attacks and needed stents put in. Not long after getting them put in she needed another stent, this time the stent had to be put inside one of the others as it was not giving enough flow.
Who knows what would have happened if we didn’t harass the hospital for the angiogram - as they weren’t going to originally. This was undiagnosed for 2 weeks and there is a lot of damage left behind because of this.
The artery on the other side of mums heart is more than 50% blocked so we never know what’s around the corner.
The cardiologists don’t follow up with regular check ups anymore, It’s as though my mums case has faded into air.
Hopefully with more research and funding, more accurate diagnosing will be available, more funding for cardiologists to follow up, funding for better medication. Post op medications are dangerous (do your research or keep an eye on my posts for more information) Hopefully it can fund scientists to grow real hearts for replacements.
Or even just to help educate us Kiwis on heart health and the irreversible damage that our lifestyle choices can make.
Remember heart disease can affect you at any age so let’s get going and raise those funds. You never know it could be you or someone you love that will benefit from this cause.
*RIP to my friend Levi’s father*
