My WHY

Mālō lava everyone,

🤎This one is close to my Heart 🤎

For those who know our story, my Māmā was born with a serious heart condition — what was called a “blue baby” back in the 1950s, with a hole in her heart, often described then as a “leaky heart.”

❤️ In those days, medical tools were limited:
• No modern echocardiograms
• Doctors relied on stethoscopes and visible symptoms
• Terms like “leaky heart” were broad and non-technical

My grandparents were told her condition was so severe that she might only live a week — maybe a month at most.

But one thing about my grandparents — they were deeply rooted in faith. Despite the odds stacked against them, my grandparents carried an unshakable belief that those odds didn’t define her future.

As she grew, she was told she wouldn’t live a full life. That having children wasn’t likely. That high-level sport would never be possible.

But like many strong Polynesian–Māori families of that time, my grandfather refused to let that narrative stand. If anything, it drove him harder to make sure my mum had every opportunity her siblings did and to live as fully as she could.

And she did. 🤎

If you know my Māmā, then you know she was an athlete in her own right — someone who defied every odd placed in front of her.

She went on to give birth to four children, endured the heartbreak of losing a set of twins and opened her heart and home to many who she whāngai over the years.

A life they once said she’d never have… she lived fully, fiercely, and with so much love. 🤎

So this May, I’ll be walking 126km in honour of my Māmā— to give back, raise awareness and support the Heart Foundation and all New Zealanders living with heart conditions. All funds raised go directly to Heart Foundation New Zealand 🙏

If you’d like to support, walk alongside me or simply send some meaalofa to the link in bio or QR code — it all means more than you know👣

Support my challenge to save Kiwi hearts

This May, I’m taking part in MyMarathon to raise funds for heart research that will help save lives.

Every 90 minutes, a person dies of heart disease. It's the single biggest killer in New Zealand, and I want to do something to support the thousands of Kiwis whose lives are impacted by this disease every single day.

Please make a donation to support my challenge and help save Kiwi hearts.

Together, we can win the race against heart disease.

Thank you!
